In summary, HVIC gate drivers are used to generate the voltage necessary to turn high voltage (>200 V) MOSFETs or IGBTs ON and OFF from the logic input from a DSP, micro-controller or other logic device. HVIC gate drivers offer the speed of operation required of the output switch (MOSFET or IGBT) by providing fast TON/TOFF characteristics and the output (or drive) current necessary for achieving such speeds. HVIC gate drivers provides additional functionality and protection features, such as deadtime insertion, over-current shutdown, current sensing, etc. HVIC gate drivers can be used in several applications such as displays, audio, lighting, motion and automotive. HVIC gate drivers are also easier to design in due to the fact that they offer complete solutions with integrated functionalities. They also offer a bootstrap power supply, eliminating the need for an auxiliary power supply. HVIC gate drivers also improve reliability thanks to integrated protection features, fewer parts, better control, high noise immunity, and low impedance to avoid dV/dt induced turn-on.
