Industrial product packages, such as the industry-standard 1” x 1”, 1” x 2”, and 1.6” x 2”, have historically engendered converters intended for operation in applications without active cooling. The “industrial” label on these packages derives from such applications where fans are avoided due to reliability concerns, as fans threaten system reliability with their intrinsically low MTBF figures. In an automated plant operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week producing chemicals, food products, or even drinking water, a shut down of the line for any such failure is intolerable. As electronics technology has advanced, it has enabled significant increases in DC/DC converter efficiency, and subsequently in power density. Thus, while the industry is still producing 5W products in a 1” x 1” footprint, it is now possible to put 25W in this same package. At that power level some airflow is necessary at elevated temperatures. Understanding that these industrial packaged products also see widespread adoption in applications where fan cooling is employed, the design objective was to develop products with the highest power rating with active airflow, and with minimal de-rating in convection cooled environments. While the Murata UEI 15 and UEI 25 series achieve these objectives, they are not encapsulated solutions. Encapsulation is often desirable in truly industrial applications, where increased resistance to chemical exposure, fungal growth, or the corrosive effects of salt fog is necessary, and Murata’s SPM series addresses these applications. The metal case, in addition to providing containment of the potting compound, also provides additional containment of, and immunity to, radiated EMI.
