The Smart Plug can have up to three main functions. First, it needs to measure real-time energy consumption of appliances. This energy consumption is typically not used for utility billing purposes, therefore the accuracy requirements may not be as stringent. Additionally, the Smart Plug may perform some basic power quality measurement. Second, the Smart Plug must communicate the energy consumption data. This can be done with a simple LCD Display readout. Alternately, the Smart Plug can send the data to an In-Home-Display or Gateway for display or further analysis. Third, the Smart Plug can be used to control power to the appliance. For example, the appliance can be operated at off-peak times to take advantage of lower electricity rates. Additionally, the appliance can be shut off or turned on remotely.
