In a typical Smart Plug Ecosystem, the appliance plugs into the Smart Plug, which in turn plugs into the AC outlet. The Smart Plug circuitry, i.e. energy measurement and communication, can also be integrated into the appliance. The Smart Plug measures the current consumption and displays it on an LCD or communicates the information to an In-Home-Display or a Gateway. The Smart Plug may be designed to communicate with a Smart Meter as well. Control and/or monitoring can also be done using a laptop or smartphone over the Internet.
